Editorial in-game review

Nobody from the editorial team has flown it in game yet. The information comes from the sources listed below.

What you will learn

  • Know the container sizes in the game.
  • Be able to estimate how long loading takes.

Prerequisites

What this is about

SCU is the size unit for containers. How much you can carry, though, depends not only on that number but on the dimensions of your cargo grid. Both are in the game data – with one gap we name openly.q1

The sizes

The cargo system keeps a separate loading and unloading time for every container size:q1

Container sizes and loading times q1From the game data · 4.10.0-hotfix (55227)

Times from the game data for automatic loading per container – without the base time of the process.

NameLoading (s)Unloading (s)
1 SCU22
2 SCU33
4 SCU55
8 SCU88
16 SCU1212
24 SCU1515
32 SCU1818

Numbers are game values; where the data names no unit, neither do we.

The data additionally knows the sizes ⅛, ¼ and ½ SCU; the same table lists time 0 for them.q1

The times apply per container. On top of that the game data states a base time for the whole loading or unloading process.q1

So one large container is faster per SCU than many small ones: 32 SCU in one box take 18 seconds, 32 single SCU boxes take 64.

Cargo and containers

Containers are cubes and boxes with fixed edge lengths. The cargo grids in the game are described in metres and state a smallest and a largest permitted item – usually 1.25 m to 2.5 m edge length.q1

Exactly how metres and SCU relate is not unambiguous in our data: one trolley is internally called “1 SCU × 2 SCU × 1 SCU” but measures 1.25 × 3.0 × 1.25 m. So we do not calculate SCU from metres.

What this means for you

  • Before accepting, hold the contract amount against your cargo grid: cargo grid & stowage.
  • Large containers save time but need space in one piece.
  • For moving between warehouse and ship, small containers are easier to handle: tractor beam & moving cargo.

Goal
Recognise container sizes in the game.
Preparation
A place with visible cargo: hangar, freight elevator or landing zone.
Task
Find three containers of different sizes, note their size in SCU and compare them with your cargo grid.
Success criterion
You can reliably tell three sizes apart.

Next: cargo grid & stowage

Checklist

  • You know the sizes from 1 to 32 SCU.
  • You know larger containers take longer – but less per SCU.
  • You know cargo grids are described in metres, not in SCU.
